After being closed for around 20 years, the Crown and Kettle re-opened in October 2005. This intricate and beautiful listed building has kept all its original features and has opened as a traditional real ale pub serving great drink and good food.
Based at the top of Oldham Road in the Northern Quarter the building dates back to the 19th Century, though there has been a pub on the site since at least 1734. The splendid and ornate interior of the Crown and Kettle, according to legend, arises from the fact that the building was intended for law courts.
The pub has been lovingly restored and the owners have been careful to preserve the fabric of the old building. A central island bar has been installed that is fabricated from mahogany panels salvaged from Regency House on Whitworth Street. The pub is made up of three rooms, a snug which is complete with carpet and open fire, a tap room for the workers and a comfortable lounge with antique mahogany paneling.
Food is traditional, freshly prepared pub grub with a daily roast. We offer at least 6 cask conditioned ales from far and wide with a strong emphasis on local breweries such as Marble Brewery, Boggart Hole Clough Brewery and Bank Top. In addition to this there is traditional cider poured from barrels on the bar itself and fruit beer, wheat beer and Belgian ales on draught.
The Crown and Kettle was a renowned old journalist haunt and was a favourite with the writers from the Daily Express who were based next door. The Crown and Kettle has a great deal of history and we have tried to embrace that history and reflect it in the way we have restored the building. The Crown and Kettle has a diverse clientele and attracts custom from all over Manchester and beyond.
